Biological Activity

Methylene Blue (MB) is a synthetic phenothiazine compound with redox-active properties, long studied as a mitochondrial electron carrier, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, and cellular protectant.
In vitro and in vivo work suggests Methylene Blue can enhance mitochondrial respiration by facilitating electron transfer between Complex I–III and cytochrome c, improve ATP synthesis under stress, and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation.
It has also been explored as a research tool in studies of neuroprotection, photodynamic therapy, and metabolic resilience.

In Vivo / In Vitro Data

Experimental models have examined Methylene Blue for:

  • Mitochondrial support and ATP restoration after oxidative stress.

  • Cognitive and neuroprotective effects in rodent memory and ischemia studies.

  • Photosensitizing and antimicrobial properties under specific light wavelengths.

  • MAO-A inhibition and potential serotonergic interactions in neural tissue.

  • Reduction of methemoglobin to hemoglobin in hematologic models.

Experimental parameters vary by model and application; consult primary literature for dose ranges and vehicle data.
